Al's Road Bike

Alan wanted a versatile road bike to use on his regular riding around the Brecon Beacons but also capable of light touring duties should he choose to spend a few days exploring.

The bike needed to be at home in the welsh mountains and all the difficulties that they present.  The geometry has been designed to cope with high speed descents and twisting mountain roads. At the same time plenty of tyre clearance has been built in without altering the required centre of mass.

The frame is built using a custom selection of Columbus tubing and finished off with stainless dropouts and braze-ons which have been polished to a mirror shine.

I built up a set of wheels using H Plus Son's archetype rims, which are tough and offer a great ride quality thanks to the wide tyre bed. These are laced to a set of Hope hubs for reliable performance and easy maintenance. Matching Hope headset, bottom bracket and seatpost clamp were also used for this reason.

Alan chose Shimano's ever dependable 105 groupset and opted to stick with a 10 speed setup for compatibility with his existing bikes.  Full length mudguards are a must around here and the neatly integrated rack is perfect for this brief (although bosses have been added should a larger rack be called for in the future!).

I am particularly fond of the candy orange paint detail which really comes to life in bright sunlight.

I look forward to hearing about all the adventures this bike is bound to go on.
